The First Shipment of Ilmenite

first_shipment2.jpgAt 06:30 on Thursday May 14th 2009 the first shipment of ilmenite from the QMM mine in Mandena, part of the Rio Tinto Group, completed loading at the Port d’Ehoala, Fort Dauphin.

The boat MV / Federal Elbe docked at the Port d’Ehoala on the morning of Monday May 11th and ilmenite loading operation lasted three days. Despite heavy rains causing some disruption, the loading was completed safely and efficiently.

All documents related to this first shipment met the requirements of the Malagasy administration.

The completion of the first ilmenite shipment was a great success for Rio Tinto, QMM and Port d’Ehoala from a professional and technical point of view as well as regarding safety and administrative compliance.

After 28 days at sea, MV / Federal Elbe docked at Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium, Sorel (Canada) on June 11th at 22:50. This was a major milestone in the history of QMM and Rio Tinto’s overall iron and titanium business.
